I just noticed the clever X-Men joke.
Something tells me metal bladed fists would make this game extra tricky.

I really like Illuminati; it is an evil, evil game. There is a "gang-up on the leader" mentality to it which can cause the game to drag on a bit, but of the games of that type, it's one of the best. And it's possible to build a solid defense so you don't get hammered down too far, if at all.

However, I don't recommend playing it drunk, unless you're all drunk. As there's zero incentive to help other people out (as befitting the spirit of the game), if you miss part of your turn or you're not paying attention to someone else's turn, no one is going to let you know. So the sober people will generally run away with the game. Not that I speak from experience.

There's a new printing coming out soon -- if I were you I'd consider getting that as it's supposed to have improved components. There's also a new expansion which I'll need to pick up at some point.
