The Vintage Gamer #31: Nuclear War

Posted by: Jim   in Card games, Podcasts

Back from the abyss with an actual game review show. This time I talk about the darkly humorous game Nuclear War, designed by Doug Malewicki and published by Flying Buffalo, Inc. I also cover what’s been happening with me over the past few months, discuss some recent gaming news (vintage and otherwise), and talk about possibilities for future shows.

Final thoughts:

Yeah, yeah, Dune is not an Eon game, but it might as well be.

Huzzah! A new game episode, and Flying Buffalo to boot. I’m glad to see you back, and sorry to hear about your job search (which I tend to regard as misery in a bottle).

I’m all in favor of lots of AH reviews; they were, after all, a big part of interesting gaming for decades. You might think back to Traveller, old Steve Jackson, and other ’70s and ’80s SF gaming (Task Force, Metagaming, Ares magazine, etc, although I guess you have covered several games in this genre). Dawn Patrol seems apropos, considering Wings of War, and Kings and Things used rearrangeable hex tiles many years ago.

Sorry I won’t meet you at Dragoncon. My parents are in town, and I seem to be the official Dragoncon dog-sitter of Greenville, South Carolina. Fair enough, I guess.

Greetings to the Pink Tornado.

While not a great fan of the subject matter, I had forgotten how clever, and original, NW was. Thanks for the reminder.

I would certainly be interested in a look at any of the games Tim mentions above. I missed out on most of the Microgames, for instance. Games like Godsfire and Stellar Conquest still gnaw away at the nostalgia cells.

Great episode, again, and congrats on the new developments.
