The Vintage Gamer #15: Ace of Aces (BG?)

Posted by: Jim   in Board games, Podcasts

This week, it’s the World War I flying ace game from Nova Games, Ace of Aces. Fly gracefully through the air with your buddies as one of those amazing young pilots in their flying machines — and then shoot them down to buy the farm below.

Final Thoughts:

The rights for Ace of Aces are currently held by Flying Buffalo, Inc. They’ve done some reprints, but nothing recently as far as I can tell. I’ll ask when I’m at Origins, but based on their web site, I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Another great episode. I had the Flying Machines set. The basic game was by far the best, with little bookkeeping and fast game play. The added rules that the other games added were just too much work for so little gain. The advanced game had you keeping track of where you were over the battlefield-either above no-mans-land, the trenches, or enemy or friendly territory. Too much work.

I enjoyed your reading on KFAG.

Keep up the great podcasts.

Hiya , just downloading one of your casts now, nice idea, hope the show is good!!

Quick question: Where are the est of the episodes?? Or are u just using some funky numbering scheme?

There was also a Lightsaber Dueling set of battle books released by West End Games around the same time as the Starfighter Battle books. Great ‘cast! Keep up the good work and keep reviewing old games. Your current format is what keeps me coming back… except for those long bumpers between segments. Those long, overplayed promos and bumpers are what eventually made me unsubscribe from the Dragon Page ‘casts. Other than that fantastic ‘cast!

Joey Konyha:

Thanks for the extra detail on the Ace of Aces advanced rules. I think I missed that on my read-through. The shot locations (which I what I caught) could add something interesting, but the battlefield locations do sound like too much work. But then, I’m not a historical detail-oriented wargamer. Doesn’t sound like you are either. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The numbering changed because I realized that I should have included the two GDC shows. I just haven’t gotten around to going back and renumbering them. Guess I’d better do that soon…

Joey:

The Lightsaber Dueling books use the Lost Worlds combat system, which is similar but not quite the same system as Ace of Aces. I think there are only a handful of poses and there’s a different method of getting from pose to pose.

Flying Buffalo was offering to create a Lost Worlds book for people at Origins — they’d take your pictures in the various poses and then build a personal copy for you. It was a bit too pricey for my tastes, though.

I’m considering the 10-20 second bumper route. I need to get some, though. Most people like to make 60 second promos instead. Glad you like the show despite the “ads”!

One thing I want to mention about this game. It has a very basic cheat, so if you’re losing a lot, you might want to find a different foe.
I’m not sure if I should put the cheat up here, it’s rather a spoiler, and for every honest person it would help, it would tempt a dozen dork-wads to use the cheat to win the game.

I’d heard that, but couldn’t remember what it was. For the best, as you say.
